Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
